چکیده

Humans routinely perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Understanding the capabilities and limits of human multitasking not only helps design efficient devices to enhance human performance, but also helps uncover the nature of human cognition. Research on multitasking is difficult because multitasking performance is inevitably influenced by many factors such as a person’s perceptual, cognitive and motor capabilities, as well as the strategies adopted for managing the conflicts among tasks. Decades of experimental-psychology research has identified many of the invariable factors that influence multitasking, but it is cognitive modeling that shows the potential in integrating the factors and making quantitative predictions about the performance. This paper reviews the results of past research on multitasking performance, and stresses the increasingly important role that cognitive modeling has played in this research endeavor. The paper discusses multiple resource theory in detail, which is the current predominant theoretical framework in psychology that incorporates

QN-ACES: Integrating Queueing Network and ACT-R, CAPS, EPIC, and Soar Architectures for Multitask Cognitive Modeling

Comprehensive and computational models of human performance have both scientific and practical importance to human–machine system design and humancentered computing. This article describes QN-ACES, a cognitive architecture that aims to integrate two complementary classes of cognitive architectures: Queueing network (QN) mathematical architecture and ACT–R, CAPS, EPIC, and Soar (ACES) symbolic a...

Toward a Unified View of Cognitive Control

Allen Newell (1973) once observed that psychology researchers were playing "twenty questions with nature," carving up human cognition into hundreds of individual phenomena but shying away from the difficult task of integrating these phenomena with unifying theories. We argue that research on cognitive control has followed a similar path, and that the best approach toward unifying theories of co...

Improvement of ACT-R for Modeling of Parallel and Multiprocessing Driver Behavior

In order to process multitasking driver behavior effectively, an improved driver cognitive behavior modeling method of ACT-R is proposed in this paper. The manual and visual modules of ACT-R are concatenated directly to cope with human subconscious/unconscious behavior. A parallel processing method is also proposed to mimic the parallel reaction style of a given cerebral area of human brain's r...

Deciding when to switch tasks in time-critical multitasking

While cognitive modeling has begun to make good progress in accounting for human multitasking behavior, current models typically focus on externally-driven task switching in laboratory-task settings. In contrast, many real-world complex tasks, particularly time-critical ones, involve internally-driven multitasking in which people themselves decide when to switch between tasks. In this paper, we...
